Building Forever Homes: How CAPS Certification is Shaping MCG’s Approach to Aging-in-Place Design

At MCG, we believe in building more than just beautiful homes, we build spaces that last a lifetime. That belief is at the heart of our commitment to aging-in-place design, a concept that’s more about smart, future-ready living than it is about age. Leading the way in this effort is our own Stephanie Lagos, one of MCG’s Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS).

We’re all aging in place. Whether we’re 25 or 75,” Stephanie says. “It’s not just about helping older adults. It’s about designing spaces that make life easier for everyone for years to come.”

What is CAPS?

CAPS stands for Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist—a designation developed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). It’s designed to help builders and remodelers learn how to modify homes in a way that enhances safety, accessibility and long-term comfort.

This certification gives me the confidence to assess our clients' homes in a way that blends form, function, and future needs” Stephanie explains. “It’s not just theory. It’s proven, practical design strategies.”

Designing With the Future in Mind

Stephanie didn’t pursue the certification just to add a credential, and she’s not the only one on the team with this certification. Mathew Meskimen, Managing Member & Licensed General Contractor states At MCG, we were already designing spaces and we wanted to do the best we could for our clients. CAPS helped me take that to the next level.

One of the biggest changes since becoming CAPS certified? Stephanie is now involved earlier in the process, thinking “ahead in time,” as she puts it. “It’s about creating a space that works not just now, but 10 or 20 years down the road. Barrier-free showers, wide hallways, door handle heights… These are small details that make a huge difference.”

From Tile to Threshold: The Power of Thoughtful Design

One unexpected insight from her CAPS training was the role of tile patterns. “Busy tile can actually cause cognitive issues in some individuals. Now I’m really intentional about patterns and textures.”

Grab bars, often seen as clinical, can also be seamlessly integrated into a home’s design. “They don’t have to look out of place. We can build the space so it looks beautiful and functions well, even if a client doesn’t want the bars installed right away.

Real Clients. Real Results.

CAPS training isn’t just theoretical; it’s already making a difference in the lives of MCG clients.

“One client had knee issues, and we talked about a zero-entry shower with support bars, a seat, lower valve height, and easy access. That simple change made a huge impact on their day-to-day life.”

Another project involved a client building their forever home near the beach. “We had to think about everything from thresholds to cabinet height to valve placement. CAPS helped me know exactly what to look for and how to adjust.”

A Team Effort

CAPS design is a collaborative process. Mathew stays closely involved throughout the project, during demo, framing and finish-out. “I want to make sure what’s in the plan is being followed on site. I’m constantly talking with our project managers, our crew, and our vendors… Everyone. It takes a team.

Educating Clients Along the Way

One of Stephanie’s favorite parts of the job is educating homeowners on the benefits of aging-in-place, especially those who think they don’t need it yet.

“It’s not about getting older. It’s about making smart choices today, so you don’t have to make tough choices later. We want clients to enjoy their homes and make sure it will be accessible in any stage of their lives.

What Sets MCG Apart?

While many builders are just beginning to understand the importance of aging-in-place, MCG is already ahead of the curve.

We don’t just build homes; we build smart, lasting spaces. That’s what sets us apart.” And the team doesn’t stop at CAPS. Stephanie’s currently pursuing additional certifications like CKBD (Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer) and UDCP (Universal Design Certified Professional) to continue strengthening the MCG experience.

Excellence is our standard. Education helps us meet that standard and go beyond it.
