Jalen Atkinson
Senior Designer
What is your favorite aspect of working at MCG?
Building relationships with the clients. The home is a sacred and vulnerable place. It is an honor to be welcomed in to create a better lifestyle through functional living. Renovations can be complex. I find through connecting with our clients and learning about their day to day practices helps alleviate the headache. In return, it builds trust and understanding.
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
Spending time with my family. I have been married to my husband Bryan for 10 years and we have a 7 year old son and 2 year old daughter. We also have a 3 year old labradoodle named Sunny. We enjoy weekends together; church, being home together, and going to new places.
What's a fun fact about you that most people don't know?
I've met the Backstreet Boys.
What are your credentials? How many years have you been in the industry?
I graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2013 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design. I have over 10 years experience in residential and commercial Interior Design. I am working towards NCIDQ certification.
What’s your favorite design feature or architectural style?
French country house or provincial architecture. I studied abroad in Provence, France in college. I was inspired by the blend of rustic textures with refined elements. The earthy color palettes on the facade created an invitation to discover timeless settings on the interior.
What is your favorite/ most complex project you’ve worked on?
Beach Cottage Addition on S. Fletcher Ave. Our client was not afraid of color and it was a fun collaboration to work with her and help her vision come to life. It was complex because we did a two story addition on the back of the existing house and a laundry room addition on the side as well as a garage at the back of the property. Connecting the old with the new and making it seamless was a challenge, but every time I walk into her home, it feels warm and inviting. It was an honor to be a part of this project, as we received a Grand Aurora Award 2024 - Best Renovated or Restored Residential Project.
What’s the one thing that makes a home feel truly special to you?
The people. A home is a place you live with your family. A house is a structure. You can build and create your home anywhere. The people are what make it special.
If MCG had a signature candle scent, what would it smell like?
The color orange.
If you could build a dream home for any fictional character, who would it be?
Lorelai Gilmore
